Elevating eResources Expertise: Library Orientation and User Training

The UP College of Engineering Library (EnggLib) recently conducted a user training on electronic resources (eResources) in partnership with CE-Logic, Academic Paradigm and Elsevier, and IEEE. This training, which took place online via Zoom video conference on October 9, 2023, to aid participants with the skills needed to effectively harness eResources such as Euromonitor, Knovel Corrosion, and IEEE Xplore Digital Library for their academic and research endeavors.

The training featured three sessions dedicated to each database, and with specific target audiences in mind. Each session commenced with an orientation video that acquainted students with EnggLib's facilities and services, followed by a concise walkthrough on accessing eResources through EZproxy, EnggLib's remote access portal where library users can access electronic resources outside the campus.

The first session, led by Ms. Daniella Louise Lagman of CE-Logic, explored the extensive capabilities of Euromonitor Passport – the world's leading provider of global business intelligence, market research data, and analysis. The presentation focused on various techniques for searching and navigating the platform. Furthermore, the demonstration of how to access valuable statistics, analyses, and dashboards was shown, including diverse data types that can be extracted and downloaded from the platform. Students gained valuable insights into using this global business intelligence platform and had the opportunity to test their knowledge through an engaging online quiz.

The second session introduced Knovel Corrosion, presented through an informative video presentation prepared by Elsevier. This tool provides a full picture of corrosion mechanisms and remedies in one place providing data, case studies, and software integration. Moreover, the video shows reference support of Knovel Corrosion for corrosion management and its use cases for engineering industries.

The final session, facilitated by Mr. Alex Liu Yupeng of IEEE Asia, delved into the wealth of resources available in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. Students learned how to navigate the platform for literature reviews, stay updated on the latest research, and access peer-reviewed materials.

Throughout each session, an online evaluation form was shared to gather valuable feedback from the participants in order to ensure future improvements for the next user training sessions.

This collaborative effort by the Library and the knowledgeable resource speakers provided students with essential skills for the effective utilization of the available resources. It is hoped that students will take advantage of the knowledge and skills they have learned to come up with better and more in-depth research.
